“For me education is less about filling buckets and more about lighting fires.”
Tim Birkhead has won many awards during his teaching career at the University of Sheffield. Among others, these include: a Senate Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching (2007), being named UK Higher Education Bioscience Teacher of the Year (2013), and the Stephen Jay Gould Prize, for increasing public understanding of evolutionary biology (2017).
Tim’s philosophy is to inspire undergraduates through teaching, avoiding traditional teaching methods where possible to stimulate interest.
One former student was so inspired by Tim that they named a newly discovered fly in his honour – the Leiomyza birkheadi.
